CNN —A woman who left the United Kingdom to join ISIS at the age of 15 has lost her Court of Appeal challenge over the decision to remove her British citizenship. Shamima Begum flew to Syria in 2015 with two school friends to join the terror group. She told UK media she had two other children prior to that baby, who also died in Syria during infancy. LONDON (AP) — Two of London's Metropolitan Police officers were dismissed from the force on Wednesday after a disciplinary panel concluded that they committed gross misconduct over the stop and search of two Black athletes. Bianca Williams and Ricardo Dos Santos, both professional sprinters, complained to the police watchdog that they were racially profiled by a group of police officers on July 4, 2020. The couple were driving home in London with their 3-month-old infant son in the back seat when police followed their car and pulled them over outside their home. The disciplinary panel heard the officers said they followed the athletes’ vehicle because of Dos Santos’ “appalling” and “suspicious” driving, and that they were doing their duty when they conducted the stop and search. But the panel concluded that two of the officers, Jonathan Clapham and Sam Franks, lied about smelling cannibis during the incident.

US Magistrate Judge Anne Shields allowed them to be bail sureties anyway because they "agreed to be personally responsible" for Santos. The guarantors were listed as Elma Santos Preven and Gercino Dos Santos, according to signatures on the court documents that were unsealed. But Santos’ father and aunt “agreed to be personally responsible” for the congressman’s compliance with the terms of his release, the order noted. The family members’ names were revealed Thursday after Santos and his lawyer lost an appeal to keep the identities of the bond co-signers under seal. Santos had argued that he needed to shield his bond co-signers to protect their privacy and risked having them with withdraw their support once their names became public. Santos Preven, who also has donated to her nephew’s congressional campaign, was described as a mail handler for the US Postal Service, in an FEC donation record from October 2021.

The House of Representatives' Ethics Committee also wanted the names, to determine whether Santos violated congressional rules on gifts. Seybert called it "disingenuous" to suggest that Santos' father and aunt might be endangered, noting that they came forward to offer help after the congressman's high-profile arraignment and expressed no concerns about guaranteeing bail. "My family & I have made peace with the judges decision to release their names," Santos posted on Twitter. A federal judge disclosed the identities of George Santos's bail sponsors: His dad and aunt. Santos was personally responsible for giving reasons to unseal their names, a judge wrote. He personally fueled the "media frenzy" cited to keep their identities private, according to the judge. US District Judge Joanna Seybert commented on Santos's conduct in an order issued on Tuesday and unsealed on Thursday, along with the bail sponsors. Santos personally fed that frenzy by speaking to members of the media following his May arraignment in federal court on Long Island, Seybert wrote in her ruling.

Both “Spider-Verse” films, in what will be a trilogy, create dimension in these kinds of details, and I don’t just mean the animation. Because what else is adolescence but a confrontation with the various possibilities in life, the infinite selves you can be? The fact that Miles and Gwen also shoot webs and swing around skyscrapers is incidental to their emotional arcs in the film. “Spider-Verse” also asks intriguing questions about the limitations of the canon, and whether tragedy is a prerequisite for a Spider-Man origin story — the death of an Uncle Ben or Aunt May or Uncle Aaron. But “Across the Spider-Verse” is never dull, nor precious with its characters and comedy.
